Malcolm X: May 19, 1925 - February 21, 1965

A special happy birthday to Malcolm X, a prominent Muslim African-American leader who gained worldwide attention during the Civil Rights Movement for his dedication towards acquiring by any means necessary equal rights for African-Americans all throughout the United States.

If I was a famous author I would publish a book with ten different endings which all went to print with varying degrees of rarity, but not tell the fans about it so that I could watch their confusion as they disagree over how the story ended. Then when they figured it out I would ‘come clean’, telling them that I had released eleven alternate endings and watch them panic again as they all try to find the last ending.

This is perfect.

….Within 3 or so hours, I received an email from the communication specialist at Kate Spade. They’re so sorry. She never got my email. KS doesn’t hate the browns….

There was a huge opportunity for Kate Spade to make this better, and now I feel insulted. You think pushing $300 and a bullshit styling appointment in my direction and hoping this will go away, and hey….I GET that. But NO. NO. That’s not enough. I do not want a gift card that will not even cover one of your questionably made handbags, from a brand that made me feel like a lesser person. They could have lied to me and told me they were going to start a diversity training program for employees. Anything to show me that they really get it. But they don’t and that it what sucks.

Now don’t get me wrong, the woman I spoke to was really great. I appreciate her reaching out. I told her I would follow up later this week because I needed to think and get my bearings about this whole annoying situation. …

Again, Kate Spade. Do Better.

Y’all. The internet.

So after yesterdays post, a few of you tweeted an reblogged because the power of the internet is real as fuck.

Within 3 or so hours, I received an email from the communication specialist at Kate Spade. They’re so sorry. She never got my email. KS doesn’t hate the browns….

This woman was told she needed to prove she purchased a Kate Spade wallet (e.g. didn’t steal it) in order to get it repaired or exchanged.

When her white friend when to try, the employee exchanged it without question.

Kate Spade’s response? Four months of silence and a phone call from a PR employee once the internet attention got too much, then an offer of a $300 gift card and a free styling session…plus a 25% off sale for everyone else to get rid of the attention.  The employee has not been fired, as far as we know.

Kate Spade…do better.
